Trump's Warhorse: No Free Rides for Allies

The Republican candidate for the vice presidential post with Donald Trump, the 39-year-old senator J D Vance, calls for unity in the party and the country behind Trump.

We will, soon, make America great and powerful again, says Vance.

He is a relatively untested politician and is now making his first major public appearance at the Republican Convention in Milwaukee.

I could never have imagined in my wildest fantasy that I would be standing here tonight, says Vance.

About-face on Trump

He devotes a long time to praising Donald Trump, a person he was very critical of and warned against when Trump campaigned and won the presidential election in 2016. He even called him America's Hitler. But a few years ago, he made a complete turnaround and is now one of Trump's most enthusiastic and energetic defenders.

He grew up with an abusive mother but was raised by his grandmother, enlisted in the Marine Corps, studied law at the prestigious Yale University, became a venture capitalist, wrote the book Hillbilly Elegy about his upbringing, and was elected to the US Senate just two years ago. Trump's support was crucial for that.

Slams China

He spends a lot of time talking about what he describes as the working people who have been betrayed time and again by politicians in Washington, seeing cheap Chinese goods flood in and jobs disappear.

I will never betray you, promises Vance, saying it's the end of "dancing to Wall Street's tune".

And he took a swipe at China, which he claims is enriching itself at the expense of American workers.

We will stand up for American wages and stop China's Communist Party from favoring its middle class while our citizens pay the price.

Before Vance's appearance, many analysts expected him to reveal more than just snippets about how foreign policy under Trump/Vance might look. But he didn't mention Ukraine at all, let alone how continued support for the country in the war against Russia might look. As a senator, he has been one of the strongest opponents of supporting Ukraine.

No Free Rides

But like Trump, he let it be understood that Europe and other US allies must pay more for their own defense.

There will be no more free rides for allies who deceive American taxpayers and their generosity, said Vance.

He added that the US should only send soldiers to war when it's necessary.

And then we will strike hard.
