Eight civilians have been killed in Russian attacks in various parts of Ukraine on Friday, according to AFP. Two people were killed in Kharkiv, reports the region's governor Oleg Synegubov. Rescue personnel have also found a dead person after an attack earlier in the week.

In the Sumy region, two people are said to have been killed on Friday, and one person in Donetsk.

At the same time, reports are emerging that Ukrainian forces have retaken nearly two square kilometers of land in the Kharkiv region, according to AP.

The area was previously controlled by a Russian battalion, according to a statement from a Ukrainian brigade.

Russia launched a large-scale offensive in the region in northeastern Ukraine in the spring. Initially, Russian forces took large areas of land, but the offensive later stalled.

The reports of Ukraine's recapture have not been confirmed by independent parties.
