UN reporters accuse Iran of denying Nobel laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi necessary medical care. The criticism comes after Mohammadi was assaulted in Evin security prison where she is being held.

Mohammadi was subjected to "physical violence" and is said to have "lost consciousness and suffered injuries to her ribs and other parts of her body" earlier in August, according to experts reporting to the UN Human Rights Council, but not speaking on behalf of the UN.

"We are deeply concerned about Mohammadi's physical and mental well-being, which has been communicated to the Iranian government," the reporters write.

"Once again, we urge Iran to immediately release her and provide her with full medical assistance."

Mohammadi has been imprisoned since autumn 2021, and has previously been detained in intervals.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work on women's rights in Iran, and for criticizing the Iranian state's violent and repressive methods.
