UN: New Morality Law in Afghanistan "Outrageous"

The UN's human rights chief Volker Türk condemns the Taliban regime's new law, which further restricts women's rights in Afghanistan. In a speech before the UN Human Rights Council, he expressed dismay over the law, and said it is unprecedented and "outrageous".

The new law, which was officially adopted in August, has even stricter control over details such as women's clothing. It prohibits women from leaving home without covering their entire body and face – and stipulates that women should not leave home except for "necessity".

Women are also not allowed to raise their voice outside the home, sing or read poetry aloud.

Previously, the Taliban regime had shut off women from education after sixth grade and limited their opportunities to practice a profession.

The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan three years ago and have introduced a range of additional measures to restrict women's freedom in the country.
