Bangladesh's new Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus says in his first speech that he intends to support the Rohingya minority group.

The economist and Nobel laureate Yunus also said that he will ensure that the Rohingya's textile industry, which is the livelihood of the Muslim minority, will be supported by the government.

Many Rohingyas have fled from Myanmar since they have been subjected to both oppression and persecution by both the current military junta and previous governments.

We must implement sustainable efforts within the international community for humanitarian efforts for the Rohingyas, and for their possible return to their homeland Myanmar, said Yunus in a speech to UN representatives and diplomats.

He emphasized the importance of the ethnic group having to enjoy "security, respect and real rights".

The transitional government led by Yunus was elected to govern Bangladesh since the previous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country after widespread protests.
