The rock group Tenacious D's future is at stake after the notorious joke about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Now the world tour is being interrupted and the members are putting their collaboration on ice.

"It's not fitting to continue", writes Jack Black on Instagram.

Tenacious D was supposed to continue their Australian tour with a performance in Newcastle on Tuesday. But when fans had already started queuing outside the arena, the message came that the concert was cancelled. The organizers gave no explanation, writes Sydney Morning Herald.

The rock duo has received massive criticism for their statement in Sydney on Sunday, not even 24 hours after the assassination attempt on the American ex-president Donald Trump.

During the concert, band member Kyle Gass was given a birthday cake on stage and was asked what he wished for.

Miss Trump next time, was the answer.

Now the message comes that the entire tour is being cancelled.

"Caught off guard"

"I was caught off guard by what was said during the concert on Sunday. I would never accept hate-filled rhetoric or encourage political violence in any form", writes band member and Hollywood star Jack Black on Instagram.

Besides the performance in Newcastle, Tenacious D had three more performances left in Australia before their tour would continue in New Zealand.

But now everything is being cancelled.

"After much consideration, I no longer feel that it's fitting to continue the tour with Tenacious D and all future creative plans are being put on ice", writes Jack Black.

What this means for the future of Tenacious D is unclear. The band has existed for 30 years and is popular in Sweden, where they sold out Hovet in Stockholm as recently as in April with their blend of rock and humor.

"I want to extend a thank you to the fans for their support and understanding", concludes Jack Black's post.

"Miss Trump"

Kyle Gass has also made a post on Instagram, where he apologizes for his statement.

"The statement I improvised on stage in Sydney was very inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake", says Gass, who adds that he does not want to encourage violence in any form.

"What happened is a tragedy and I am incredibly sorry for showing such poor judgment. I apologize deeply for the pain I have caused and I am deeply sorry for the hurt I have caused".
