The Iran-backed Houthi movement attacked a Greek cargo ship with a sea drone in the Red Sea on Wednesday, according to the US military command Centcom in a statement.
The attack caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room, according to Centcom, which adds that the ship, owned by a Greek company and registered in Liberia, was last in port in Russia.
The Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The US military has destroyed three rocket launchers in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen over the past 24 hours, as well as shot down a drone over the Red Sea, writes Centcom.
Several shipping companies have rerouted and are avoiding the Red Sea to avoid being attacked by the Houthi movement. The militant Islamist movement, which controls parts of Yemen and is backed by Iran, says the attacks on civilian shipping are in solidarity with the population of Gaza.
