Clooney to Biden: Drop out of the election

More and more voices are being raised for Joe Biden to drop out of the autumn's American presidential election. The latest in line: George Clooney.

"I believe in him, but the only battle he cannot win is the one against time", writes the actor in The New York Times.

After President Joe Biden's heavily criticized debate performance against Donald Trump at the end of June, many supporters have begun to doubt his ability to win the autumn election against Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, the hitherto most prominent profile came forward to urge Biden to let someone else take the fight for the White House in November.

The actor, producer, and director George Clooney held a large fundraiser in Hollywood for Biden just a week ago – one of many he has hosted – but is now urging the president to reconsider.

"Joe Biden is a hero, he saved democracy in 2020. He must do it again in 2024", writes Clooney in a debate article in The New York Times.

Ignored Signs

He describes in the text how he "loves" Biden and sees him as a friend, but also how he reacted to Biden's aging during the fundraiser in June, and that no one can win over time.

"I have been a democrat all my life, it's nothing I hide. I am proud of my party and stand for it", he writes further and states:

"We have all been so afraid of the prospect of a second presidency for Donald Trump that we have chosen to ignore all warning signs."

Clooney urges the highest-ranking democrats in Washington to act and ask the president to step aside.

Pelosi: Up to Him

Just hours before the article was published, the first call came from a democratic senator, Michael Bennet from Colorado.

It's not about politics, it's a moral issue about the future of our nation, he said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, said that the decision can only be made by Biden himself.

We encourage him to do it, for time is running out, she said to MSNBC without wanting to reveal where she stands on the issue.

Biden himself has rejected all demands for resignation and announced that he still sees himself as the most qualified candidate.
