Despite the injured Lionel Messi being absent from the pitch, Argentina won the match against Peru in the South American Championship, and won 2–0. Argentina and Canada are advancing to the quarterfinals from the group.

A nicely placed assist from Ángel Di María led to Lautaro Martínez giving Argentina the lead in the 46th minute. The goal scorer was hugged by his celebrating teammates, and then went to hug the injured Messi – who was near Argentina's substitute bench.

Just before the end of the match, Martínez doubled his team's lead, which makes him the leader in goals scored in the championship so far with his four.

Messi did not play in Saturday's match because he suffered a leg injury in the match against Chile earlier in the week, a win that gave Argentina a spot in the quarterfinals.

Peru left the pitch without a goal for the third time in the championship. The team played a draw against Chile in their premiere and then lost 1–0 to Canada.

Canada is clear for the quarterfinals.
