Diabetes: New testing routine reveals large number of unreported cases

The number of people with type 2 diabetes is much larger than what statistics and registers show. This becomes clear when health centers in Rosengård in Malmö have introduced new routines for blood sugar tests.

It is a large number of unreported cases for all those who have mild symptoms or are in the early stages of diabetes, says Faria Karim, diabetes nurse at Rosengård Clinic, to Sydsvenskan.

Blood sugar tests are now always taken on patients with high blood pressure, overweight, or general diffuse symptoms. The new routine is a result of a new collaboration between three healthcare centers in Rosengård and the municipal home care.

According to the national diabetes register, six percent of the population has type two diabetes, but far from all those with the disease are included there.

Faria Karim points out many advantages of detecting the disease early and doing something about it, not just from a socioeconomic perspective.

You prolong your life with quality, being free from the feeling of illness. You become a good role model for your children. You win economically, being healthy gives economic benefits.
