A two-story school building has collapsed in Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria. At least 21 students have died and 69 people have been injured, according to the Red Cross.
The authorities have not yet confirmed the number of dead and injured.
"About 120 people were trapped, while many were evacuated," says the state's information officer in a statement. The state authorities blame the tragedy on the school's "weak structure and location near a riverbank". Schools with similar problems are now being urged to close.
Dozens of locals gathered near the school. Many cried while others offered to help.
Building collapses are common in Nigeria. The reason is often cited as a lack of enforcement of building regulations and poor maintenance.
