Soon, electric cars will outnumber petrol-driven cars in Norway, according to calculations commissioned by the Norwegian newspaper Dagens Näringsliv. However, it will take some time before diesel cars are outcompeted by electric cars.

The newspaper has asked the independent interest organization Opplysningsrådet for Road Traffic (OFV) to calculate the car fleet. The figures for June show that there are 31,000 more petrol-driven cars than electric cars, but that difference can be evened out by autumn.

The Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association says that a milestone is about to be passed.

There are no other countries that have achieved this, says the association's general secretary Christina Bu.

However, diesel-driven cars are still significantly more numerous than electric cars. There are over one million registered diesel cars and around 730,000 electric cars. That difference will take several years to even out, according to OFV.
