The export of fish and shellfish from Norway plummeted by a record amount, down by more than two billion Norwegian kronor to 12.1 billion in June, according to monthly figures from Norway's Seafood Council. Problems with salmon farming are behind the decline.
Norway's Seafood Council refers to "biological challenges" that have reduced production volume and a larger proportion has gone to export as salmon fillets.
Norway is currently the largest in the world in salmon farming and accounts for more than half of the global production of farmed salmon. The export of fish and shellfish is also Norway's largest export industry after gas and oil.
In June, the export volume of salmon amounted to 93,400 tons, which is 4 percent less volume than the same month last year.
