In 2022, a government inquiry presented a proposal to establish a new register containing information about households' assets and debts. The register was primarily intended to be used for analysis of economic policy at the Swedish Central Bank and the Financial Supervisory Authority, as well as by researchers.

However, it did not come to fruition, as the government announced on Thursday that they had decided not to proceed with the proposal.

Instead, the government is tasking Statistics Sweden (SCB) to propose how the agency can complement the sample surveys it already conducts. The complementation will consist of information about individuals' housing and consumer loans, as well as certain assets.

It is considered to benefit both efficiency and personal integrity to build on an existing sample survey instead of creating a new register, according to the government.

SCB is to report on its assignment by January 31 next year.
