Domestic air travel decreased by 20 percent in June compared to the same month last year. The explanation is a greater investment in international flights with reduced domestic supply as a result, according to the state-owned airport operator Swedavia.
The statistics apply to the number of passengers to and from Swedavia's ten airports, the largest in Sweden.
Airlines have invested in increasing traffic to foreign countries via the largest airports, Arlanda and Landvetter. This primarily affects residents in northern Sweden and smaller towns, who get worse opportunities to travel further within the country and abroad, according to Swedavia.
At Arlanda, the number of domestic passengers decreased by 24 percent in June compared to the same period in 2023. For Landvetter, the figure is minus 33 percent.
In Visby, where Almedalen Week was held in June, the number of international passengers increased by 240 percent compared to last year.
The total number of passengers at the airports in June is, however, essentially unchanged compared to last year.
