Eleven inmates were killed in connection with prisoners breaking out of a prison in the coastal city of Saint-Marc in violence-plagued Haiti on Friday, according to a police spokesperson.
According to the spokesperson, one of the prisoners was apprehended. It is unclear how many managed to escape.
The newspaper Le Nouvelliste reports that prison staff went on strike for better conditions and quotes a government official who expressed concern about "mutiny". However, it is not clear whether any prison staff assisted in the escape.
This is the third time this year that prisoners have escaped from prison in Haiti. In March, thousands of inmates were released in two coordinated attacks on the country's two largest prisons in the capital Port-au-Prince. Shortly afterwards, Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned due to losing control of the country.
