The highest-ranking official at Estonia's Ministry of Defence is resigning, citing a lack of investment and a "critical" shortage of ammunition.

Kusti Salm, the top civil servant under the Defence Minister, will leave his post in August. In the TV programme "Aktuaalne kaamera", he reveals that he has repeatedly appealed to the government for a multi-billion investment to replenish ammunition stocks, without success.

Unfortunately, Estonia is currently in a situation where that decision has not been made. I must regretfully admit that I do not think it is right. To be able to say these things publicly, I have taken the decision to resign, says Salm in the programme, according to ERR.

Currently, Russia is developing its war machine faster than Estonia and its allies can match.

The country's army chief also recently announced his resignation after demanding a rapid increase in the defence budget and new ammunition purchases.
