Microsoft risks hefty EU fines. The EU Commission has levelled new accusations against the American cloud and software giant for abusing its dominant market position by linking the video conferencing app Teams to its other business software.
According to the EU, Microsoft's actions to protect its dominant position in the video conferencing market have been ongoing since 2019, including restricting the ability to interact between Teams and other competing software.
The fines for competition breaches can amount to up to 10 per cent of a company's global turnover, although it is rare for fines to reach those levels.
Microsoft's CEO Brad Smith says in a comment on the decision that the company will work to find solutions to the concerns raised by the EU Commission.
The EU's formal warning to Microsoft comes after the platform Slack reported the competitor for competition review in 2019.
On Monday, the American tech giant Apple received a similar warning from the EU Commission for how App Store disadvantages other app manufacturers.
