Israel's far-right Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on Thursday, a visit that risks disrupting the ongoing talks on a ceasefire in Gaza.

Both Jews and Muslims claim ownership of the area on a hill in Jerusalem, and visits like Ben-Gvir's, even though they are legal, are seen as a provocation.

He himself says that he went to the disputed Al Aqsa mosque in the area to pray for the return of the hostages "but without a ruthless agreement".

He wants to ensure that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not give in to international pressure to enter into a ceasefire and wants Israel to continue the war in Gaza.

The visit comes just one day before Netanyahu travels to the USA, where he is to speak before Congress.
