German used pro-Palestinian phrase – gets fined

A court in Berlin has sentenced a woman in her 20s to pay a fine equivalent to approximately 6,900 kronor after using the phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" during a protest.

The woman used the phrase during a prohibited gathering in Berlin on October 11. The court therefore concludes that the woman's choice of words, so shortly after the bloody attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, "can only be understood as a denial of Israel's right to exist and support for the attack".

Her lawyer calls the verdict a "dark day for freedom of speech".

The phrase is seen by some as a call to destroy Israel, while others believe it simply advocates for equality between Palestinians and Israelis.

Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser banned the phrase in November as part of a ban on Hamas activities in the country.

The ban is, however, controversial, and in different parts of the country, courts have handed down verdicts involving the phrase – and many have found it permissible.

Germany has shown unwavering support for Israel since the Hamas attack in October, but the stance has led to accusations of Palestinian voices being marginalized.
