A young man had a testicle removed after a medical mistake at a hospital in Västerbotten, reports Västerbottens-Kuriren (VK).
It was when the man sought medical attention for pain in his groin that the healthcare assessment incorrectly diagnosed an inflammation in the testicle, something he had suffered from previously.
Instead of conducting a thorough examination with ultrasound or emergency surgery, the man was sent home with antibiotics and a follow-up appointment for a week.
When the man returned to seek medical attention four days later, it turned out that he had suffered a testicular torsion that had caused tissue to die and the testicle needed to be removed.
"If the operation had been done immediately, the testicle would likely have been saved," writes Region Västerbotten in a press release according to VK.
The incident has been reported to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg) in accordance with the lex Maria.
