Despite repeated healthcare visits over three years, a health center and women's clinic in Skellefteå failed to detect that a patient had cancer in time, reports Norran.
The patient sought care for, among other things, stomach pain, weight loss, changed bowel movements, and iron deficiency. As a response, the patient was told that the iron deficiency was due to heavy menstruation.
When healthcare finally gave the cancer diagnosis, it had spread so much that the patient could not be cured and later died as a result of the disease.
One of the reasons the person was not referred to the right care is, according to the region's investigation, that they sought care from different healthcare providers, which made the treatment responsibility unclear.
The incident has been reported to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate according to lex Maria, the region states.
