Åhman after Olympic gold: "We're taking the next European Championship"

From one competition to another and with short time in between. Already next week, the European Championship in beach volleyball awaits – but Olympic gold duo David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig are hesitant. The European Championship comes every year, so we'll take the next one instead, says Åhman.

In four years, the duo has had Olympic Games focus. The training has been extremely hard and the dose has been higher than many other pairs in the world top.

According to coach Rasmus Jonsson, free days have been a shortage, and he says that it has mostly been about two weeks.

In short: The Paris Olympic Games have been the most important.

After the Olympic success, the European Championship in the Netherlands has been even more squeezed – despite Åhman and Hellvig being reigning champions.

Now we have been here for over two weeks and had full focus on this. And to switch mentally will be very, very tough, says Åhman.

Now we have done our job here and will take a little break. The European Championship comes every year, so we'll take the next one instead.

According to Rasmus Jonsson, the plan is another: The European Championship is intended to be played.

That's the plan, he says.

There is registration on Tuesday and then we play the first match on Wednesday.

The coach says that the competition schedule is not optimal, but there's not much to do about it, and simply says "that's the way it is".

In sports, it's about being hungry and energized, then we'll try to create hunger on Wednesday. But we would have preferred a week in between, he says.

The schedule continues to be tough for Åhman and Hellvig.

The week after the European Championship, a World Championship tournament in Hamburg awaits, and after that one in Utrecht.
