Hundreds, possibly over a thousand, animals have burned to death in a large market in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.
The fire broke out early on Tuesday morning local time, at Chatuchak weekend market, which is a major attraction in the city. The flames spread quickly across around a hundred market stalls, covering an area of approximately 1,300 square metres.
There are no reports of human fatalities. However, large numbers of animals – including dogs, snakes, fish, birds, monkeys, and rabbits – have died where they were confined. The authorities have not yet calculated the exact number, but it is estimated to be in the hundreds, with Thai media suggesting it could be over 1,000.
Animal dealers at the large market have repeatedly been accused of selling endangered species.
