The decision was made after a prayer was held for Ismail Haniya, the deceased political leader of the terrorist-stamped organization Hamas, last week.
The mosque writes that they prayed for the deceased Palestinian leader as a person at the request of some visitors. The imam thought that everyone deserves a final prayer, and did not think about the consequences.
"The decision was theologically correct, but unsuitable considering his status", the mosque writes and adds that the imam's decision was not consulted with the leadership.
The imams will not hold any Friday sermons or lead any prayers for the time being.
Minister for Social Affairs Jacob Forssmed (KD) reacted earlier to the event.
”We have recently received extremely disturbing information about a prayer in Gothenburg's mosque. Extremism has no place in religious environments”, he wrote on X on Wednesday.
