The strike begins on the two-year anniversary of 22-year-old Mahsa Zhina Amini's death, reports the Spanish news agency Efe.

"Once again, the political and ideological prisoners in Evin prison have started a hunger strike in solidarity with the Iranian people who are protesting against the government's repressive policy", reads a statement published on Mohammadi's Instagram account.

Narges Mohammadi has been imprisoned since autumn 2021 and had previously been detained on several occasions.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work on women's rights in Iran – and for criticizing the Iranian state's violent and repressive methods.

Mahsa Zhina Amini died on September 16, 2022, after being taken away by Iran's morality police for not wearing her hijab correctly. The death led to an enormous and rare wave of protests across the country that lasted for several months. Hundreds were killed and tens of thousands were arrested.

On the anniversary of her death, reports emerge that the family's home has been surrounded by security forces. A relative of the family tells Radio Farda that Amini's father received a call from the Iranian intelligence service ordering the family to stay at home – otherwise, they will be arrested.
