The Israeli government has voted through a temporary law that extends the compulsory military service by four months – from 32 to 36 months.
The parliament, the Knesset, is expected to approve the law, which will come into effect immediately after.
The law will at least initially apply for five years and will also affect those who have already begun their service.
The reason is the war in Gaza, which began after Hamas' bloody attack on Israel on October 7 last year.
In late June, the country's highest court ruled that even ultra-orthodox men must be called up. They had previously been exempted from full-time studies in religious seminaries, an exemption that sparked criticism from the more secular population.
