Kenyan police have found three more bags with body parts from women at a dump, the latest revelation in a horror story that has shocked the nation.
The bags, which were pulled out of the water on Saturday at an abandoned stone quarry in a slum in the capital Nairobi, contained, among other things, severed legs and two torsos, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI.
"We want to assure the public that our investigations will be thorough and cover several theories, including but not limited to cult activities and mass murder", DCI announces.
The day before, the police announced that dismembered bodies of at least six women had been found in Mukuru in southern Nairobi. The authority Ipoa, responsible for monitoring the police, reports nine bodies: seven women and two men.
The public is urged to remain calm while the investigation is ongoing. A group of police investigators and forensic experts have been prevented by angry people from reaching the crime scene, according to DCI.
The discoveries on Friday were made less than 100 meters from a police station. Meanwhile, the Kenyan police have been accused of abducting demonstrators after violent, government-critical protests. Several demonstrators have been missing since then.
Human rights groups accuse the Kenyan police of brutality and several human rights violations, and express concern after the discovery of the dismembered bodies.
An investigation into possible police involvement in the crimes is ongoing, announces the monitoring authority Ipoa.
