A patient in Västerbotten sought care for increasing back pain, but despite repeated healthcare visits, the healthcare system failed to detect that the patient was suffering from widespread kidney cancer. This is stated by the region in a press release.
Gradually, the patient lost mobility and needed to be transported by ambulance between healthcare visits. The patient later died.
According to the region, the diagnosis was made too late, which was partly due to deficiencies in the care chain, an incorrect interpretation of symptoms, and a lack of places for investigation.
The incident has been reported to Ivo, the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, in accordance with the Lex Maria regulations.
