Andreas Kramer failed to win a medal in the final of the 800 metres at the European Championships.
He finished fifth at the Olympic Stadium in Rome with a time of 1:45.70.
He was just three-quarters of a length short of a bronze medal. He says he fell victim to his own mistake.
Andreas Kramer won the European Championships silver in 2018 and in the spring took silver at the indoor World Championships in Glasgow. So he came to Rome with medal hopes – and a desire for revenge after finishing fourth in the European Championships in 2022.
He has a few days to take it easy and digest the disappointment.
Gabriel Tual, France, won in 1:44.87 and Mohamed Attaoui, Spain, finished second in 1:45.20.
Home athlete Catalin Tecuceanu, Italy, took bronze in 1:45.40.
