Let school staff inspect school bags

School staff should have the right to search students' school bags, believe The Liberals, who also want schools to be able to use metal detectors in entrance controls in certain situations.

Principals simply need more tools to make schools a zone free from crime and be able to stop new recruitments to gangs, says Education Minister Johan Pehrson (L) at a press conference in Malmö.

Today, school staff lack legal right to search carried bags, even if there are suspicions that students have, for example, weapons or drugs with them.

A change is needed so that principals are given the opportunity to, not always, but be able to search bags and lockers to maintain order and safety in schools.

The Liberals also want to allow the use of metal detectors in entrance controls at schools in certain situations. Such decisions should, according to the proposal, be made in consultation with the police, for example, in the event of an ongoing serious gang conflict in the area where the school is located.

When these gang wars are going on, it is important that the school can be a safe zone.

A third proposal from The Liberals is free leisure activities for certain children aged six to nine years.

We are talking about children in the lower ages, who live in socio-economically disadvantaged areas and who need to have a meaningful leisure time, says Sara Wettergren (L), Municipal Councilor in Malmö.

Corrected: In an earlier version, the wrong occupation was stated in the headline regarding those whom The Liberals want to be able to search bags.
