A lawyer had such extensive contact with her convicted client, and his wife, that she breached the required independence and impartiality in her profession, according to the Supreme Court.
She is now being expelled from the Bar Association.
The client was convicted of a highly publicized murder in the Stockholm area and is now serving a life sentence. The expelled lawyer, however, represented him in another case.
The grounds for the expulsion also include that the lawyer took on an assignment for the client's wife despite a conflict of interest, that she failed to supervise an assistant lawyer, and that she contributed to manipulation during phone calls with another detained client.
The circumstances are considered "particularly aggravating" by the Supreme Court, which emphasizes that the violations risk damaging the judicial system, trust in the administration of justice, and the important role of lawyers in a rule of law state.
