France's President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the government's resignation. The same set of ministers will, however, lead a transitional government.

The outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has been asked to lead the transitional government that will handle daily matters until a new government is in place.

After the election on July 7, the left-wing coalition emerged victorious, but secured too few seats in parliament to form a majority government.

The announcement comes after Macron held his first ministerial meeting on Tuesday since his centrist coalition lost the election at the beginning of July.

The left-wing alliance NFP – consisting of the Left Party Okuvade France, the Socialist Party, the French Communist Party, and the Green Party Ekologisterna – won 193 of the 577 seats in parliament.

The weeks following the election have been marked by internal strife, and the group has still not agreed on a prime ministerial candidate.
