Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath of office for a historic third term on Sunday.

At the same time, he is expected to present 30 ministers in the new government.

Flanked by party colleagues and leaders of coalition parties, he promised to defend the country's constitution during the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan presidential palace in New Delhi.

Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party lost its majority in the election, but he received support from alliance parties after rapid negotiations to lead a new government. A total of 15 parties are part of the NDA alliance.

Larger alliance parties have demanded significant concessions for their support, while the BJP has tried to negotiate down the demands, according to The Hindustan Times.

Modi's previous government consisted of 81 people.

Safety in Delhi has been tightened ahead of the ceremony. Several foreign leaders were present, including the prime minister of Bangladesh and the president of Sri Lanka.

73-year-old Modi is, after Jawaharlal Nehru, the second president to be re-elected for a third term since India gained independence.
