Monaco stunned Barça - first goal for Yamal

He has scored goals in La Liga and the European Championship. Now Lamine Yamal is also a goal-scorer in Champions League. But Barcelona – with one player less – lost to Monaco, 1–2.

The 17-year-old has set several record scores during his relatively fresh football career in Barcelona.

When the star found the goal in the Champions League – in his eleventh match – the question arose: Did he become the youngest goal scorer in the tournament?

No.

After the full hit away against French Monaco – 1–1 in the 28th minute – it turned out that he was 28 days too old.

Tough start for Barça

The goal at Stade Louis II was, however, of the most important kind.

Barcelona had a nightmare start to the club's Champions League premiere.

+ Midfielder Eric Garcia was sent off after ten minutes.

+ Six minutes later, the visitors were behind, as Maghnes Akliouche placed the ball in for 1–0 next to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's post.

Coach Hansi Flick made a couple of adjustments to the starting lineup, and twelve minutes later came the payoff.

The player in focus: Lamine Yamal.

The Spaniard fooled two opponents before outsmarting Philipp Köhn in Monaco's goal.

But the teenager's goal did not help Barcelona in the meeting with Monaco.

The home team won 2–1 after George Ilenikhenas' decisive goal in the 71st minute.

Yamal's teammate Ansu Fati continues to hold the record as the youngest goal scorer after the goal against Inter in 2019.

Draw for Hiens' Atalanta

However, it was a draw for Swedish national team player and CL debutant Isak Hiens' Atalanta against Premier League team Arsenal, 0–0.

It's those kinds of evenings you've dreamed about since you started playing football. It was a bit unreal at first, but then it was just a regular match, he says to Viaplay.

Serie A club Atalanta had the chance to decide from the penalty spot but was stopped by brilliant saves from Arsenal's goalkeeper David Raya.

The 29-year-old threw himself to the left and saved the penalty from Mateo Retegui – and then to the other side of the goal to stop the rebound from the Italian.

It's still a result you take before the match, but as it turned out with the penalty and as the match developed, we did enough to win. But that's how it is in football, there are small margins.

Brest opened the Champions League season with a win. Hugo Magnetti and Abdallah Sima scored the goals in the 2–1 meeting with Sturm Graz.

Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško set the lead goal already in the fourth minute away against Atlético Madrid, but veteran Antoine Griezmann and José María Giménez saw to it that the Spanish club won 2–1.
