Tuesday's stock market trading was characterised by semiconductor giant Nvidia, which continued its upward trend. The share price rose 3.5 per cent.

Earlier in June, Nvidia became the third company to have a market capitalisation of at least 3,000 billion. And on Tuesday, Nvidia surpassed Microsoft as the world's highest-valued company.

The other two companies that have surpassed this threshold, Apple and Microsoft, had a worse day on the stock market. Apple lost 1.1 per cent, while Microsoft fell back 0.5 per cent.

Otherwise, the price changes were small on the leading indices on the New York Stock Exchange during the day.

The broad S&P 500 index increased 0.3 per cent, the Dow Jones industrial index rose 0.2 per cent, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index closed unchanged.

Yields on government bonds fell after a report showed that retail sales increased last month, but not as much as expected. The yield on 10-year government bonds, for example, fell back to 4.22 per cent.
