At least one person died when an ice cave on Iceland collapsed on Sunday. Two tourists are missing.
At the time of the collapse, a group of around 25 people were visiting the cave, which is a popular tourist destination in the Breidamerkurjökull glacier in southeastern Iceland. Most of them were reportedly near the cave's entrance, but some people got stuck in the ice masses.
Two injured people have been found and taken out with severe injuries, but one of them died at the hospital during the night to Monday, according to Icelandic media.
The search effort has so far had to be done manually, says police officer Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson to Vísir. They are working in narrow spaces and hacking their way through.
All of this has to be done by hand, more or less. We have saws and chisels and such to break the ice, but nothing more than that, says Rúnarsson.
The tourists in the group came from several different countries, according to the police, but it has not been said which countries they are from.
