A patient contacted healthcare but was advised to wait. Later, the patient died after having a stroke.
Region Västmanland reports the incident to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) and concludes that healthcare made a wrong assessment.
Just hours before, the patient had been discharged after having a TIA (transient ischemic attack), also known as a ministroke. However, the patient's condition worsened and they had difficulty finding words.
But the advice from healthcare was to wait, and the next morning the patient's condition was even worse. The patient was then referred to the emergency department and further to the university hospital for neurosurgical care.
The patient had then had a stroke, became weak on one side of their body, and later died from complications.
The incident is considered a serious healthcare injury, and although it cannot be established that delayed treatment contributed to the patient's death, the prognosis would have been better if the patient had received care immediately.
The incident is reported according to lex Maria, and the hospital has implemented educational measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
