A man who was sentenced to prison did not get a place at an institution and was left in custody – for nearly a year. Now the Parliamentary Ombudsman (JO) is directing sharp criticism at the Prison and Probation Service, writes Dagens Juridik.
Despite the convicted man having no restrictions, he was forced to sit in isolation from meeting other inmates, and the cell lacked a toilet. For six weeks, he was also not allowed to receive visitors, as there were inmates in the visiting rooms.
The man was initially held in custody in Sollentuna but was later transferred to Norrköping, where he was held in custody for eight months.
It was not until nearly a year after being sentenced to prison that the man was placed in an institution, which breaks the deadline set out in the Sentence Enforcement Act.
The JO is now directing severe criticism at the Prison and Probation Service, although it notes that the custody facility has taken measures and attempted to rehouse the man in a so-called community custody facility.
