The broadcast from the Russian Leningrad region to the North Korean Rason follows the summer meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Pyongyang.

The goats are intended to provide North Korean children with dairy products in order to alleviate the food shortage in the country, reports Politico. Almost half of North Korea's population is believed to suffer from malnutrition due to the regime's policies, according to international aid organizations.

More animals will follow, according to a press release from the Russian supervisory authority Rosselkhoznadzor.

Russia has strengthened its ties to North Korea since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The dictatorship in the east has openly supported Russia's war and has been accused of supplying Russian forces with weapons, which both parties have denied.

During the meeting in Pyongyang in June, a new security pact between the countries was announced.
