Premier League giant Manchester United is laying off 250 of its 1,100 employees, reports The Athletic and Daily Mail.
The cutbacks are part of the new United boss Jim Ratcliffe's strategy to reduce costs within the club. Ratcliffe bought 27.7 percent of the shares in the Premier League club at the beginning of the year.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United's workforce has grown from an average of 983 employees in 2021 to 1,112 employees in 2023. This makes the football club the largest in England in terms of the number of employees.
In comparison, for example, champion club Manchester City has 520 employees and Liverpool around 1,005 employees, although the number can vary during a season.
