At least 33 people have been killed in extensive Russian attacks on cities across Ukraine.

In Kiev, a children's hospital was hit in the largest attack on the capital in several months.

Four more cities in eastern Ukraine – Dnipro, Kryvyj Rih, Slovjansk, and Kramatorsk – were attacked, according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In total, over 40 rockets of various types were fired in the attacks, which took place during the day.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls the attack on the Ochmatdyt children's hospital "particularly shocking".

In Kiev, volunteers, doctors, and rescue workers are searching through the rubble at the part of the hospital that was hit in the attacks.

New Attack

40-year-old Natalia Svindler was in the hospital with her two-year-old son when the warning signal started sounding.

The nurses told us to take shelter in the basement. After a while, we heard a loud bang and then a small part of the basement ceiling collapsed, she says to AFP.

Two adults have been confirmed dead after the attack there.

Several residential buildings and a quarter with office buildings, as well as energy infrastructure, were also hit in the attacks on the capital, according to local authorities.

On Monday afternoon, reports emerged of a new attack where another private healthcare facility was hit in Kiev.

In President Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyj Rih, ten people are reported to have been killed and around 40 injured.

In total, at least 31 people have been confirmed dead, around 20 of them in the capital, and around 100 injured in the attacks on the various cities.

"Count on us"

The attacks come as Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting Poland, where he signed a bilateral security agreement with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the day. The two leaders held a minute of silence for the victims of the attacks.

You can always count on us, said Tusk after the signing of the agreement, which was concluded ahead of this week's upcoming NATO meeting in Washington.

Zelensky is simultaneously demanding stronger reactions from Ukraine's allies.

I would like to see greater resistance and a more powerful response to the attack that Russia has once again directed against our population, against our country, against our children, he says at the press conference with Tusk.

Russia's Defense Ministry claims that Monday's attacks were exclusively targeted at military targets, and alleges that images from Kiev suggest that the destruction was caused by Ukraine's air defense.
