The National Board of Institutions (Sis) is going into crisis mode due to a lack of space, reports Sveriges Radio Ekot.
The reason is the dramatic increase in the number of young people sentenced to closed youth care.
"In January 2023, we had around 50 young people serving closed youth care. Today, we have over 160. Furthermore, a large number of verdicts are awaiting confirmation, and many minors are being held in custody. This very rapid increase has major consequences for our capacity within youth care as a whole", says Head of Staff Marcus Sundberg in a press release.
In early July, the government called an emergency meeting about the acute lack of space after the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) sounded the alarm.
According to SKR, there is a high risk that those waiting in line will commit serious violent crimes.
