SJ is discontinuing commuter train services with regional trains between Stockholm and Uppsala due to lack of profitability, writes DN. The trains have had two departures per hour and have transported thousands of passengers daily.
The commuter train should not be confused with SL's commuter train, which operates on the same route.
Competition on the route has intensified from the growing Mälartåg, and according to CEO Monica Lingegård, SJ loses over 50 million kronor annually by maintaining the traffic.
Keeping the train while simultaneously making record investments in new trains and increasing capacity on other routes is irresponsible, says Lingegård to DN.
We can't make it work. And letting it cost so much money is not an option. Then it becomes my responsibility to shut it down, she says.
The traffic will continue until the timetable change on December 15. SJ's regular regional trains northbound from Stockholm will continue to stop in Uppsala, but not with commuter frequency.
