Slovenia looked set to achieve their first-ever win in a European Championship.

Then Serbian Luka Jovic stepped forward and killed off the Slovenian dreams.

The striker equalised to 1–1 in the match's final minute.

Last time Slovenia qualified for a European Championship was 24 years ago, in the 2000 European Championship. Then, Slovenia came very close to their first three-pointer in a European Championship finals, but let a 3–0 lead slip to 3–3 against Serbia and Montenegro.

Now it finally looked like the win was going to come. 1–0 against Serbia, and only seconds left to play. Then the 26-year-old striker Luka Jovic stepped forward.

The 29-year-old right-back Žan Karničnik, normally with domestic NK Celje, popped up on the far post and gave Slovenia the lead in the 69th minute.

But in the match's final minute, Serbia got a corner, which they utilised well. Luka Jovic, normally with Milan, nodded in the equaliser and wild jubilation erupted among the Serbian supporters in Munich. The match thus ended 1–1, and Slovenia will have to wait for their first-ever European Championship win.

Turbulent build-up – threatens to leave the European Championship

The build-up to the crucial match against Slovenia was not entirely smooth for the Serbs.

During Wednesday's match between Albania and Croatia, hateful chants about Serbs were sung, which has made the Serbian Football Association furious. The association's general secretary has even threatened that the country might leave the European Championship if Uefa does not punish both Croatia and Albania for the chants, writes AP.

Both teams alive

The late equaliser means that, for Serbia, the hope of finishing second and guaranteed advancement to the quarter-finals is still alive.

Had they lost, the team would have remained on zero points. And if England later tonight beats Denmark, Serbia would no longer have had any chance of finishing top two in the group. Now the hope is very much alive.

In the final round, Serbia faces Denmark, and Slovenia takes on England.
