The decision on the special protection was made in recent days by Alejandro Mayorkas, minister for internal security, after a request from Washington DC's mayor Muriel Bowser, reports American media.

This means, among other things, that the planning for January 6, 2025, will be led by the Secret Service, writes Politico. The police authority FBI will also be involved and monitor the threat picture. A larger number of police on the ground, extensive cordoning off, and the use of technology that can detect weapons of mass destruction are to be expected.

Several exercises

In addition, the Capitol Police Force has on its own planned for the ceremony and conducted a series of exercises, notes CNN.

The storming on January 6, 2021, occurred when the US Congress members gathered in the Capitol to ceremoniously count the presidential election's electoral votes and formally declare Democrat Joe Biden the winner and future president.

Nearby, tens of thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump had gathered for a political mass meeting. At the same time, Trump repeated his false claims of systematic electoral fraud and claimed that he was the real winner. He urged his supporters to go to Congress and "fight like hell".

Hundreds of indictments

Parts of the crowd did as he said. The protests turned violent when hundreds of people stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, vandalized, and entered one of the chambers.

Nine deaths can be linked to the storming, according to AP, and over 700 indictments have been filed, including against Donald Trump.

This year's presidential election is between Trump and the Democratic candidate, current Vice President Kamala Harris, and will be held on November 5.
