The staff at the Swedish embassy left the capital Pyongyang in August 2020 because the pandemic and local restrictions complicated diplomatic work. Until now, the work has been carried out from Stockholm.
"With the re-establishment, the embassy's operations will return to the situation that applied before the pandemic", the Foreign Ministry writes in a press release.
Sweden has long had an engagement on the Korean peninsula, primarily since the Korean War in the 1950s, and has had an embassy in Pyongyang since 1975. Sweden also serves as a protective power in the dictatorship for several countries, including the USA, Australia, Canada, and Germany.
Sweden's ambassador to North Korea has been Andreas Bengtsson since 2021.
