Swedish medal sailing postponed

There will be no medal racing in the Olympic Games for Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson in the 470 class on Wednesday. A new attempt will be made on Thursday. They feel calm, ready, says national team captain Magnus Grävare.

Dahlberg/Karlsson are fourth in the overall standings and have a good chance of a medal in the waters outside Marseille with a top placement in the medal race.

However, the wind conditions have been very unpredictable throughout the entire Olympic Games sailing event, with light winds and cancelled or postponed races as a result.

Dahlberg/Karlsson would have sailed in a fourth race on Wednesday, but at 16:30, the competition committee announced that it was cancelled.

"A little surprised"

I was almost a little surprised that it was so close to us getting to sail. So we were prepared to wait, to be ready, but not to put in too much energy, says national team captain Magnus Grävare, himself a former Olympic sailor.

On Wednesday, the wind speed varied greatly, from around 7-8 meters per second to down to 2 meters per second, which is barely sailing speed.

Two planned medal races could still be sailed during the nearly two hours when the wind picked up – the women's and men's single-handed dinghy Ilca 6 and 7 classes. But during the men's race, the boats barely made it to the finish line.

Therefore, the Swedish hopes will have to wait another day to fight for the medals. The organizers are aiming to hold the race on Thursday, and the wind forecast looks better then.

"They have everything"

There was no start in the medal race for the Nacra 17 catamaran class on Wednesday, the boats went out on the water in preparation for a possible start only to turn back again. Swedish pair Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson are sailing in this class, but they are ninth in the overall standings and have no chance of a medal.

They are of course disappointed about this, but they firmly believe in the pair Karlsson and Dahlberg.

They have the routine, they have everything. It's just a matter of them getting it together in the small race. And I believe they will, says Emil Järudd.
