The French parliamentary election continues to bring surprises since President Emmanuel Macron shocked the country by calling for new elections.

On Saturday, former President, socialist François Hollande, announced that he is considering running in the parliamentary election.

Hollande was President from 2012-2017, but was voted out and left the presidency with low confidence from both right- and left-wing groups as well as his own party.

Earlier, four left-wing parties - the New People's Front - announced that they are uniting to counter Marine le Pen's far-right party, National Rally (RN), and President Macron's party, Renaissance.

Macron called for new elections since his own party nearly collapsed in the European Championship election while RN made significant gains.

Around 250,000 demonstrators gathered across France on Saturday to express their discontent over the right-wing wave and RN's successes in the European Championship election.

The first round of voting in the election to the National Assembly will take place on 30 June and the second on 7 July.
