The EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has not given up hope of achieving numerical gender equality in the next commission – despite the fact that it currently looks like it will be 10 women against 17 men.

The process is ongoing. We are now at a two-digit number (of women), but I have not yet met all potential candidates, says von der Leyen at a press conference in Brussels.

Although she notes that the most important thing is that the new commissioners are professionally competent, she emphasizes the importance of the posts also being distributed with geographical and political balance.

And there should also be a balance in terms of diversity and representing EU citizens – and half of EU citizens are women, says von der Leyen.

How the new commission will finally be proposed is expected to be clear at the earliest next week.
